O youngsters, the elderly man has his enviable memories, and not the least of them is the memory of a long journey in mid-spring or autumn on the outside of a stage-coach. Posterity may be shot, like a bullet through a tube, by atmospheric pressure from Winchester to Newcastle: that is a fine result to have among our hopes; but the slow old-fashioned way of getting from one end of our country to the other is the better thing to have in the memory. The tube-journey can never lend much to picture and narrative; it is as barren as an exclamatory O! Whereas the happy outside passenger seated on the box from the dawn to the gloaming gathered enough stories of English life, enough of English labours in town and country, enough aspects of earth and sky, to make episodes for a modern Odyssey.

年輕人！老年人也有著令人嫉妒的回憶，其中最珍貴者莫過於在仲秋或仲春搭乘馬車的長途旅程。後行者可能會如同子彈穿過砲管般地射出，藉由大氣壓力從溫徹斯特飛至新堡：這是符合吾人期望中的好東西，但是那老式的、緩慢的、從我們國家的一端到另一端的移動方式，卻是我們記憶中能夠擁有的美好事物。砲管式的快速旅行無法帶來畫面與故事，他們就有如一聲驚嘆，喔！那麼無聊。然而，砲管外面，愉快地乘坐在馬車裡的旅客，從黎明到黃昏，蒐集了夠多的英國生活點滴，在城鎮與鄉間遭遇了夠多的英式俗務，夠多的天地景貌，多到足夠寫出《現代奧狄賽》。
